How many song titles are there in the world that use the word “baby”? Goddamn heaps right? This is true, and especially so in eras gone by. An easy radio show to create then, one might assume… nope! Found heaps of contenders of course, but so many just didn’t quite match my ear’s possibly too rigorous and exacting (and totally subjective!) “standards”. Others were rejected for over use in years of creating radio shows, and for various ethereal reasons .. what was left was spread across genres and devilishly difficult to sequence with any semblance of flow (which meant a few more casualties) … a challenge but fun (Baby’s On Fire!) and finally a finished show has emerged.. yeah, baby!

This show is entirely based on a Guardian music article from October this year.
From Arsedestroyer to Zoogz Rift: 50 underground albums you’ve never even heard of
We took this headline as a challenge.
We’d heard of just 3. Of those 3, only 1 had provided a song for a previous show of ours. Way back in 2010, the wonderful My Time by Roberto Cacciapaglia & Ann Steel made the playlist.
1/50 Ain’t Bad
That left 47 albums to listen to, 47 reviews to research and 47 backstories to read. That’s the thing with underground albums – chances are there’s a backstory. You know the kind of thing. The entire pressing of a recording that samples sumo bouts 1 made in a small house on Skye 2 is warped on a meat packing machine 3 but eventually released on a limited edition cassette at a Science Fiction festival 4 shortly before the artist drives off in a VW Beetle never to be heard from again 5.
30 made the final cut. Some are the lowest of lo-fi, some are the most gleeful of rackets (we’re looking at you Harry Pussy), some are plain odd and most defy our technically limited attempts to blend them seamlessly into a mix.
Same old Joint really.
